Nashville-based HCA Holdings Inc.’s (NYSE: HCA) earnings jumped to $1.9 billion in the fourth quarter, thanks to a pretax gain of $1.5 billion stemming from its October purchase of the Colorado Health Foundation’s 40 percent interest in the HealthOne hospital system.
HCA is the parent company of Wichita's Wesley Medical Center. The company also recently closed on the acquisition of Galichia Heart Hospital.

A report by the Broward County Office of the Inspector General found that 2,100 oxycodone pills and more than 150 hydrocodone pills were among at least 3,600 pills unaccounted for at the county Office of the Medical Examiner and Trauma Services.
The 3,600 may be only a small sample of the pills that weren't tracked at the M.E.’s office, the report by Inspector General John W. Scott states. Broward County has been the epicenter of a crackdown on pill mills, and the report expresses concern that some of the pills may have ended up in illegal sales channels...
Build-A-Bear Workshop is planning to open a store Feb. 27 in Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, the retailer's second store to be located inside a hospital.
The St. Louis-based retailer, whose stores allow customers to make their own stuffed animals, said its Sinai Hospital location will offer clothing and accessories for the toys themed specifically to the medical center. Items will include patient gowns, a wheelchair, lab coat, doctor and nurse scrubs, and a Sinai Hospital T-shirt.

Merck said Monday it plans to file a new drug application for its experimental insomnia drug Suvorexant layer this year.
The announcement follows the completion of two successful phase-III clinical trials for the new drug candidate.
“Suvorexant selectively targets an important pathway involved in helping to promote sleep and, if approved, will be a new, first-in-class treatment for patients with insomnia,” said Peter S. Kim, president of Merck Research Laboratories.
