Majority of Fla. voters oppose Medicaid cuts for hospitals

A new poll conducted on behalf of the Safety Net Hospital Alliance shows that 71 percent of Florida oppose the reimbursement cuts legislative officials are proposing in the 2012 session. Voters indicated they are most concerned that additional reimbursement cuts will force hospitals to eliminate specialized health care services such as trauma care, advanced care for newborn babies, burn units and outpatient clinics. Mission creates subsidiary to assist start-up pharmaceutical firms

Mission Pharmacal Co. has formed a new business unit called Alamo Pharma Services that will provide smaller pharmaceutical firms with operational and human resources support for their pharmaceutical sales teams. The company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mission Pharmacal, will be based in Doylestown, Pa. The company will perform all of the recruiting, training and assisting of personnel for both Mission sales teams and outside organizations as well provide fleet management, expense management, analytics and sales force automation services via partner organizations...

Nashville-based HCA Holdings Inc.’s (NYSE: HCA) earnings jumped to $1.9 billion in the fourth quarter, thanks to a pretax gain of $1.5 billion stemming from its October purchase of the Colorado Health Foundation’s 40 percent interest in the HealthOne hospital system. HCA is the parent company of Wichita's Wesley Medical Center. The company also recently closed on the acquisition of Galichia Heart Hospital. HCA posted earnings of $4.25 per share on revenue of $7.8 billion. Excluding one-time items, earnings were 94 cents per share...
Broward inspector general: M.E.'s office didn't track pills

A report by the Broward County Office of the Inspector General found that 2,100 oxycodone pills and more than 150 hydrocodone pills were among at least 3,600 pills unaccounted for at the county Office of the Medical Examiner and Trauma Services. The 3,600 may be only a small sample of the pills that weren't tracked at the M.E.’s office, the report by Inspector General John W. Scott states. Broward County has been the epicenter of a crackdown on pill mills, and the report expresses concern that some of the pills may have ended up in illegal sales channels...
Mayo Clinic spin-out Tenex Health raises $11.8M

Tenex Health Inc., a startup that’s commercializing Mayo Clinic technology for treating tendon injuries, has raised $11.8 million in capital. The company rounded up the funding via a reverse merger with a publicly traded company and a PIPE (private investment in a public entity) deal. Tenex launched in 2009. It was initially based in Rochester, Minn., but moved its headquarters Lake Forest, Calif., in 2010. Two chiropractors have opened the Valley Pain and Wellness Center in Chandler. Ryan Bowling and his wife, Anne Perez, have teamed to open a pain management and chiropractic clinic to help patients heal naturally, without the use of narcotics. Treatments are available for most pain conditions, including chronic migraines, back and neck ailments, carpal-tunnel syndrome, sports injuries, scoliosis and injury-related pain. Build-A-Bear to open second hospital-based store

Build-A-Bear Workshop is planning to open a store Feb. 27 in Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, the retailer's second store to be located inside a hospital. The St. Louis-based retailer, whose stores allow customers to make their own stuffed animals, said its Sinai Hospital location will offer clothing and accessories for the toys themed specifically to the medical center. Items will include patient gowns, a wheelchair, lab coat, doctor and nurse scrubs, and a Sinai Hospital T-shirt. Merck to file application for new insomnia drug

Merck said Monday it plans to file a new drug application for its experimental insomnia drug Suvorexant layer this year. The announcement follows the completion of two successful phase-III clinical trials for the new drug candidate. “Suvorexant selectively targets an important pathway involved in helping to promote sleep and, if approved, will be a new, first-in-class treatment for patients with insomnia,” said Peter S.
