The idea for athenahealth Inc. dates back to 1997, when the notion was hatched in the living room of one of its founders. Since then it has grown by leaps and bounds from a small private outfit to a $47 million company with a singular mission: handling accounts receivables for doctors. The company aggressively tracks money owed to physicians with a seemingly recession-proof approach that has created revenue growth for 36 consecutive quarters. The company, which went public in 2007 (Nasdaq: ATHN), reported revenue of $48.7 million for the three months ending Sept. 30, compared with $35.4 million for the same period the year before. Since it went public, its stock value has grown more than 30 percent and now trades at $46.54.
