DBJ: What was your first job (as a teen or in college, etc.)?
HANKINSON: In my first job, I was a summer recreation leader for the City of Richardson Parks and Recreation Department. The city hired college students to coordinate and provide recreational activities for younger children during the summer months, when they were out of school. The children would come to a park in their neighborhood and there would be crafts and activities, things to keep them busy, things that helped them to learn, etc. As part of that same program, the city set up a program at the recreation center for children who were dealing with physical and mental handicaps, and that’s where I worked. It was a tremendous responsibility for a young person; you had to take the initiative, plan and organize the activities, and be creative and resourceful. But working with the children and their families made it all worthwhile. The experience taught me how much I enjoyed working with people and being challenged, even at that very young age, to do something that was beyond what I had done previously. In everything I do, I continue to look for those same kinds of challenges.
