Ever since the banking crisis started, a debate has ensued behind the scenes about how to make sure the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. has enough cash to fund the losses caused by failing banks. Most people know deposits in U.S. banks are insured by the federal government through the FDIC, but they don’t think about where the funds come from to pay for that insurance. Even though deposits are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, losses from failed banks are actually covered by a deposit-insurance fund maintained by the FDIC. The cash in that fund is obtained from premiums paid by the banking industry.
