Product Description
Ernie Steury's remarkable life and ministry as a medical missionary in Tenwek, Kenya, is recounted in this compelling biography. A humble Indiana farm boy, Ernie built one of the most successful medical mission facilities in the world. Ernie's influence, however, went beyond tending to physical needs. Not content merely to heal bodies, Ernie sought to change lives as well through the ministry of the Gospel. Through the story of Ernie Steury, readers will be inspired to follow his example as dedicated servants of a loving, living God who is anxious to show the world what great things He can accomplish with an individual totally committed to Him.

awesome! March 19, 2010 A. K. Park I recently went to tenwek and read the book while there, it was a great testament to what as the book stated, one man could do who is totally committed to something in Christ.
What God Can Do July 12, 2009 Debbie (Alpena, AR United States) This book is an interesting, engaging biography of Ernie Steury. The author is an excellent storyteller, vividly portraying Ernie Steury's life and personality through dramatic, amazing, and funny stories. The book does cover some of his childhood and early adulthood, but mainly focuses on his work in Kenya.
Much information is included about the local culture and the problems local customs created during medical treatment, like the superstitions about death, blood, and spirits and the practices of female circumcision and infanticide. However, the living conditions at the hospital weren't as primitive as in some missionary books.
Most of the surgery scenes are not highly graphic, but the few that are might make people queasy if they get queasy watching TV surgery scenes.
The book quotes letters and articles written by Dr. Steury to show the emotional stresses and ups and downs of missionary work. It also includes quotes from family, friends, and staff. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone interested in medical missions or in rural Kenya.

A Wonderful Read June 9, 2009 Grammie (Bend, Oregon) The story of Dr. Ernie Steury and his family touched my heart. To see how God worked in their lives to bring them to Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya was most inspiring. He worked with so little upon arrival and God used him to bring in medical equipment and supplies, to establish a safe water supply for the hospital, to build a hydroelectric plant there, to greatly enlarge the hospital and the Tenwek campus, and to touch the lives of so many kenyas, both for better health and for spiritual well being over a 50 year period. Our son and his wife are presently working in this hospital. Having visited for three weeks in March, it was wonderful to read about all the things I had seen there. Don't miss his amazing biography.

Review of "Miracle at Tenwek" August 29, 2008 Thomas R. Steury (Redmond, WA USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Dr. Steury's ability to provide surgical and other medical treatment over a 50 year period with limited equipment is surpassed only by his humbleness and commitment.
