French Impressionist Claude Monet (1840-1926) is much-lauded as the renowned archetype of the style. Frustrated with the restrictions of traditional art, he moved to Paris in 1859, where he met Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Camille Pissaro, who together laid the foundations for Impressionism. Monet and Renoir often painted outdoors together, resulting in many of his en plein air landscapes. His soothingly tranquil series of Water Lilies became a powerful influence on abstract artists. The series was inspired by his fascination with his celebrated water-garden at his home in Giverny during a later period in his life. This particular piece exudes a casual loveliness, its vibrant color palette encapsulates the atmospheric beauty of the impossible - which was Monets intention.
If the world really looks like that I will paint no more!
