This Gift consists of 12 soft yarn balls of approximately 2" in diameter (two each in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple). One ball of each color has a string, (approx. 6 inches long) with a loop on one end so that they can be dangled. This Froebel Gift is introduced while the child is still an infant/toddler (intended for children ages 3+ mos. with adult participation) up to 4 years of age.
Froebel recognized that a ball is often a child's first or favorite toy. It is often lightweight and easy to grasp or hold. For Froebel, the ball symbolized unity because it is a complete whole, a pure form. The whole is the beginning of understanding and so everything else is derived from the whole.
Friedrich Froebel invented Kindergarten. the first form of early childhood education, and was the first to promote education for children ages birth to 3. This method influenced Maria Montessori, Rudolf Steiner, and other educational methods that followed. The Kindergarten also inspired the Bauhaus artists in the development their unique school of design. Franck Lloyd Wright, Buckminster Fuller and other famous architects and artists were educated with this method.
