Flatback sea turtles (Natator depressus) are so named because their shells are extremely flat. While adult flatbacks are olive green, hatchlings are bright blue. Flatbacks have a very limited range, being found only in the waters of Papua New Guinea and Australia, where they prefer bays, coastal coral reefs, and grassy shallows.The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists flatbacks as being Critically Endangered. Flatbacks are threatened with extinction by hunting, egg harvesting, destruction of nesting beaches, pollution, and entanglement in fishing nets.This is a silver and enamel pin. Master artisans paint each article by hand using solutions containing colored granules of glass. Next, they fire the pieces in a kiln to produce an alluring richness of color. It measures approximately 3.8cm by 3.5cm.
