By the 1930s, Australias Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) had been nearly exterminated by a combination of hunting, forest clearing for agriculture, and an increase in wildfires. Good laws and intensive population management have brought the Koala back, to a degree. Today there are about 100,000 individuals.Koala young, like all Australian marsupials, are called joeys. The blind, bean-sized newborn joey makes its way to a nipple inside its mothers pouch and remains there for months. After weaning and an interim of eating eucalyptus leaves predigested by its mother, the joey migrates to her back.This is a silver and enamel pin. Master artisans paint each article by hand using solutions containing colored granules of glass. Next, they fire the pieces in a kiln to produce an alluring richness of color. It measures approximately 3.5cm by 4.2cm.
