I'm a Browncoat who loves this book ... but it could be better. December 30, 2008

I'm a huge fan of most of Joss Whedon's work -- particularly Firefly and Serenity. However, although "Better Days" is a great graphic novel about the crew of Serenity I couldn't shake the feeling that it was missing something. br / br /The "something" I felt was missing in this story was Whedon's willingness to take more chances. I don't know if it's the publisher (Dark Horse) or Whedon's own self-imposed restrictions, but it felt like this story was a PG-13 or R-rated movie that was edited and rewritten for a PG audience. br / br /I don't think Whedon should do anything as drastic as Garth Ennis' "The Boys" but "The Boys" is a great example of the kind of risk-taking that we need to see in graphic novels for adults. Firefly and Serenity is a story of outlaws who carry guns, commit crimes (even kill people to commit those crimes when needed), and hang out with prostitutes in space. There's nothing "PG" about the story ... so Whedon needs to take some risks and be honest in these graphic novels. br / br /I hope that Serenity lives on in more graphic novels (or movies ... if Whedon and the cast are willing) but the crew of Serenity deserves to have their story told without the need for it to be "edited for general audiences." br / br /Keep flying.

You know how it feels like when you break up with someone and a few months later you come across this person somewhere? Feels a little awkward? Well one can experience a similar feeling with this book. There was definately an "It's over" moment from fox when this show was abruptly ended and it's wonderful magic never caught on again as much as one would like. The movie couldn't bring what I loved about the show back and the same goes for this somic but for different reasons. br /This book is not set after the movie, the setting would be before it, yet not a prelude like the other. This is like an episode which never aired in comic book form. So we know that whatever happens here won't have any repercussions on a grander story in the making. The good thing about this is that you get the good old feeling of the team from the TV series again. Wash is alive and kicking and Book is with them on the ship, so is Inara. It reminds you of how great the show was, but it only lasts 3 issues with nthing telling you that there is hope for more Firefly goodness later. br /But, these three issues seen independently of anything else, are fantastic and if you liked the show, then you'll love these. They're written by Joss so every character sounds like they should. What I really love is how it reffers to previous episodes. For example, you'll see how far and wide the Hero of Campton's tale has been spread :) Art wise, it is the same artist as the previous comic and he makes most of the characters look very similar to the show, with the exception of Wash. Wash looks like a regular white guy. But Mal and the rest look perfect. br / br /If you are a fan of nostalgia, then this is definately the book for you.

Better Days is fun and filled with beautiful art. I love the interactions between the crew as always. Their fantasies about their share of the loot are hilarious. The way Joss keeps his characters interacting like a bunch of spinning plates is amusing. The Captain has to have his crew!

"It is good to see the crew in action again" br / br /Is where any firefly / serenity fan starts of with this graphic novel. Just having any new story featuring the characters from firefly is a great thing. However, I was definitely let down by the story we're given in this Volume. br / br /Volume 1 was much better at continuing the story from the TV show and movie and furthering it. Giving is new info about characters and things a lot of the fans were wondering about like the blue glove men. It still wasn't perfect and still felt more like a single short TV episode. br / br /Volume 2 does an even worse job. My biggest complaint is with the story. (Spoiler Warning). It really just feels like a re-hash of episodes we've already seen before. The entire "We're so rich what will we all do with our money, only to have the crew lose it all at the end". This has already been done before and lead to a fairly predictable ending. br / br /Yes it's Serenity. But don't expect it to live up to the TV show / Movie or you'll be disappointed. It might be asking to much for it to live up to that considering how truly great the TV show was.

It is good to see the crew in action again. The story takes place before the movie so there are some insights as to how the crew got where they were before the movie.
