Product Description
ESSAYS: Anything goes

I think essays are great because I can write anything I want, any way I want.
I put these together over a period of years when I had some ideas I wanted to record, or when something interested me, and I wrote them in any way at all, just letting the material I was presenting express itself. Some are serious because sometimes I think about serious matters. So here you will find my thoughts on the nature of science, creationism, evolution, religion, mysticism, humanism, and on the origin of human values. These force themselves on the attention of anybody who thinks beyond the needs of everyday life. I explore the question of what science really is, and how it reveals a reality that is weird beyond description.
The contrasts between religion, meditation and science as ways of knowing, are totally fascinating and provide a continuing intellectual feast which I found impossible to ignore, so you will find this theme popping up in several essays, in addition to the one devoted to this topic..
Much of what I have written concerns the absence of critical thinking in our modern culture, and nature of truth, which I regard as a moral imperative. I therefore wrote essays on education and on how it should be taught. I recognize that so much of modern life is shot through with irrational nonsense so I also have essays on the “emperor’s new clothes” syndrome in modern music and art, and on the great academic scams arising, from the student revolts of the sixties and seventies.
But not all these essays are devoted to such important themes. Some are trivial because a lot of things are trivial, although interesting and fun. So I described the proper way to boil an egg; the mind set of gamblers; and my involvement with movies, cartoons, and superheroes.
There are a few personal pieces in this collection, which I included because I think they are universally relevant to the human condition. I was concerned about these because they perhaps reveal more about me than I want to make public, but I put them in nevertheless.
Of course, I think the results are worthwhile. I hope you will sample them and enjoy reading them as I enjoyed writing them
