His sad story overrides Kate’s initial reluctance to talk to him, and she invites him to join the coffee group where he is wholeheartedly accepted, especially by her good friend, Bitsy.
Kate and her coffee group live in an idyllic world most people would envy. Bainbridge Island is Seattle’s Sausalito, known for its lively cultural scene and rural beauty. Kate is in her forties, intelligent, single and attractive, and owns a bed and breakfast with a cottage garden. She shares the B&B with Milo, a mini-dachshund dynamo smart enough to play a role in saving Kate’s life. When “the gang” gets together at the coffeehouse, news and jokes fly, reminiscent of an English pub. Bitsy, a sexy, brash talking little character and Len, an artistic café owner incapable of being insulted and up for anything, are her closest friends.
With Kate’s introduction, Kevin moves easily into island life. He treats Bitsy as a buddy but is sometimes too familiar with Kate, who detests the intrusion into her personal life. She is intuitive and her suspicious feelings about Kevin disturb her.
