There are two types of artists, those who seek to understand and those who seek to be understood. David Lay falls into the first category. In his work, he shares with us, what he sees on this quest for understanding. It is, however, a never ending journey, there is no destination. There are always, fresh bye-ways to explore. Travel with him for a while.

David began his career as a designer and scenic artist in the theatre. working at all levels from seaside rep ( Summer Stock) to the Royal National Theatre in London. He then went on to work as a Scenic Artist in the wider context of Commercial Theatre, Television, film and exhibitions, spending some time working on Euro-Disney in Paris and similar projects in England , Ireland and Europe. This experience added greatly to his technical skills as a painter but brought with it the danger of developing a bland slickness which can, obscure and hinder understanding. Therefore, throughout this period, David chose to spend at part of each year working as a designer and scenic artist in small theatres. This role involved him in a considerable amount of "on the job" teaching of younger colleagues.

Now David runs a small company with his son providing faux finishes and murals for architects, interior designers and, private clients. This he combines with art photography and easel painting. Theatre begins with the word. It is the task of the designer to provide an environment to enhance the delivery of those words.
Although seldom now working in the theatre, the word still feature in David's current work.
